HOW Art Museum is pleased to announce that the collaborative exhibition Twilight of the Ritual will be on view from April 12, 2024, featuring the works of Maleonn and Li Xiaoliang. The exhibition showcases two independent solo exhibitions, respectively Nostalgia of the Mundane and The Light of Safaring. The exhibition is curated by Lu Mingjun.
Since the birth of photography, it has been taken as ritual for both the photographer and the subject. As Barthes put it, "the photograph belongs to that class of laminated objects whose two leaves cannot be separated without destroying them both." Until the emergence and popularization of mobile internet and smartphones, when everyone could take pictures anytime, anywhere and thus "became a photographer", the ritualistic aspect of photography and the concept of photography studios gradually faded from the public. As a result, the relationship between the photographer and the subject irresistably loosened, yet even disintegrated. However, this does not necessarily mean that smartphones have taken place of cameras. On the contrary, traditional film photography (including digital pieces) highlights the unique unity and concept of ritual even more. Maleonn and Li Xiaoliang are both "photographic fundamentalist". Their practices have proven that rather than being enamored with a long-lost texture or aesthetic, they are guarding a certain relationship regarding ritual that has already faded. Perhaps for this reason, their photos are always enveloped in melancholy and sentiment.
Nostalgia of the Mundane presents Maleonn’s creations over the past decade, including four series such as Mobile Photo Studio, Childhood Sweetheart Photo Studio, and Will This World Become Better. Influenced by his parents, who were playwrights, Maleonn deliberately created a sense of drama and conflict in his works, reflecting his contemplation on time and life, which resonates with the lyric, "when the years and beauty have already become sighs in the dust and wind, your sorrowful eyes hold teardrops from the old days."
The Light of Safaring showcases over 70 works from Li Xiaoliang's recent two series, including videos, installations and photography. Over the past decade, Li Xiaoliang has been focusing on screen images with persistent thematic concerns. In his recent works, he explores the other side of various themes, expressing more individual narratives through "safaring" in various natural environments in different countries. The Melting Wax series exhibited in this show interprets inner thoughts through pure imagery, amidst the contrast of black, white and red.
The exhibition will last till August 11, 2024.
